Dear Friends,<\/p>\n

Welcome!\u00a0 I greet and thank all of you who, by your presence, honor this \u201cHouse of the Pope\u201d in Canada as we recall and celebrate the Fourth Anniversary of the Election of Pope Francis.<\/p>\n

Je salue en particulier les repr\u00e9sentants du gouvernement f\u00e9d\u00e9ral, des gouvernements provinciaux et des municipalit\u00e9s, les membres de la communaut\u00e9 diplomatique, les autorit\u00e9s religieuses des diff\u00e9rentes traditions, et les amis et voisins de la Nonciature. Merci pour votre pr\u00e9sence qui exprime le respect et l\u2019estime que vous portez au Saint Si\u00e8ge, et de mani\u00e8re tr\u00e8s particuli\u00e8re, l\u2019affection que vous portez au Pape Fran\u00e7ois.<\/p>\n

The Feast of the Pope!\u00a0\u00a0 But who is the Pope? I will answer the question – and I think it is interesting – when speaking of this Pope, Pope Francis, born and baptized with the name Jorge Mario Bergoglio \u2013 to relate to you the reply given by the Pope during the course of an interview with Fr. Antonio Spadaro, Editor of the Italian Journal La Civilt\u00e0 Cattolica in August, 2013.\u00a0 Quoting from the Interview by Fr. Spadaro: \u201cI ask Pope Francis point-blank: \u2018Who is Jorge Mario Bergoglio?\u2019 He stares at me in silence. I ask him if I may ask him this question. He nods and replies: \u2018I do not know what might be the most fitting description…. I am a sinner. This is the most accurate definition. It is not a figure of speech, a literary genre. I am a sinner.\u2019 The pope continues to reflect and concentrate, as if he did not expect this question, as if he were forced to reflect further. \u2018Yes, perhaps I can say that I am a bit astute, that I can adapt to circumstances, but it is also true that I am a bit na\u00efve. Yes, but the best summary, the one that comes more from the inside and I feel most true is this: I am a sinner whom the Lord has looked upon\u2026 a sinner on whom the Lord has turned his gaze. And this is what I said when they asked me if I would accept my election as pontiff.\u2019 Then the pope whispers in Latin: \u2018I am a sinner, but I trust in the infinite mercy and patience of our Lord Jesus Christ, and I accept in a spirit of penance<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00c0 partir de cette conscience de lui-m\u00eame, \u00e0 partir de cette d\u00e9finition que le Pape donne de lui-m\u00eame, il est ais\u00e9 de comprendre pourquoi, depuis les premiers jours de son pontificat, le Pape Fran\u00e7ois semble n\u2019avoir d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat que pour un sujet : la mis\u00e9ricorde<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

La mis\u00e9ricorde est le code pour d\u00e9chiffrer le pontificat du Pape Fran\u00e7ois. Il est fermement convaincu que la Mis\u00e9ricorde de Dieu englobe non seulement les situations personnelles, mais aussi les \u00e9v\u00e9nements de ce monde, les \u00e9v\u00e9nements de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9, les groupes humains, les familles, les peuples et les nations. Pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment pour cette raison, rien et personne n’est jamais perdu. L’\u00eatre humain n’est jamais irr\u00e9cup\u00e9rable. Aucune situation n’est imperm\u00e9able au pouvoir subtil et irr\u00e9sistible de la bont\u00e9 de Dieu qui n’abandonne jamais l’homme et sa destin\u00e9e. La v\u00e9rit\u00e9 ne se r\u00e9alise que dans la mis\u00e9ricorde. En effet, le dernier mot de l’histoire et de la vie n’est pas celui du conflit, mais de l’unit\u00e9, \u00e0 laquelle le c\u0153ur de chaque \u00eatre humain aspire.<\/p>\n

From here comes the daily work of the Pope. Which is?\u00a0 That of opening doors, building bridges, establishing contacts, maintaining friendships, promoting unity. With all: the great and the powerful of the world and with the poor, with special preference for the poor, the homeless, the lonely and the unwanted; attentive to leading the Catholic Church, with the solicitude of Christ the Good Shepherd, to welcoming as also visiting other Christian Confessions, other Religious Groups and Faith Traditions, and people of good will the world over.\u00a0 In fact: with every man and women in their own unique and inviolable dignity.<\/p>\n

The doors of the house of Pope Francis in the Vatican, in the last few months, have been opened many times to welcome Canada:\u00a0 in the bishops of this country who made their \u201cAd limina<\/em> Visit<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 All came back renewed and enthusiastic as the result of the welcome as also the time and attention Pope Francis gave them.<\/p>\n

The Pope also received Prime Minister Trudeau.\u00a0 Together they shared their common concerns for peace in the world, for care of the environment and for recognizing the need to pursue reconciliation and healing with the Indigenous peoples of Canada.\u00a0 As we approach the celebrations marking the 150th<\/sup> Anniversary of Confederation this July, we all have to go back to school as it were, to examine a page of history and recognize that while many positive benefits came from the evolution of Canada as a nation there were along the way, difficulties and failings.\u00a0 Pope Francis has spoken out on other occasions about these painful realities as did the Popes before him, acknowledging that in the work of evangelization the legitimate aspirations as also the cultural inheritance and profound dignity of persons and communities were not always accorded due respect and honor.\u00a0 Much more needs to be done in the work of Truth and Reconciliation.<\/p>\n

Lors de cette visite, le Premier Ministre a une fois encore exprim\u00e9 le d\u00e9sir de tant de canadiens d\u2019une c\u00f4te \u00e0 l\u2019autre, que ce pays puisse ouvrir ses portes pour accueillir le Pape Fran\u00e7ois dans un avenir qui ne soit pas trop lointain\u00a0; ce pape bien aim\u00e9 de nous tous. Pour le moment, permettez-moi, au nom du Pape Fran\u00e7ois, de vous exprimer toute l\u2019affection et le respect qu\u2019il porte \u00e0 cette grande nation; cette nation dont la devise, tir\u00e9e de l\u2019\u00c9criture Sainte, reconna\u00eet que la grande beaut\u00e9 et la grande majest\u00e9 de ce pays, aussi bien dans son peuple que dans sa terre, b\u00e9n\u00e9ficient de l\u2019attention providentielle de Dieu – \u00ab Qu’il domine de la mer \u00e0 la mer \u00bb dit le Psaume; \u00ab A mari usque Ad mare \u00bb <\/em>\u00a0(Ps. 72:8).<\/p>\n

Tout en c\u00e9l\u00e9brant ce soir la f\u00eate du Pape, nous pouvons aussi proclamer \u00abBonne f\u00eate au Canada\u00bb \u00e0 l\u2019occasion du 150\u00e8me<\/sup> anniversaire de la Conf\u00e9d\u00e9ration !<\/p>\n
