Esteemed and dear brother Cardinals, dear brother Bishops, fr\u00e8res et s\u0153urs dans J\u00e9sus\u00a0Christ,<\/p>\n

It is really a great joy for me to begin my mission as Papal Nuncio to Canada with such\u00a0an emotional celebration, namely the consecration of the Auxiliary Bishop of Ottawa\u00a0Mgr. Christian Riesbeck. I was still in Vilnius (Lithuania) when I got the news of his\u00a0appointment, and I realized straight away that he is a very young bishop.<\/p>\n

J\u2019ai pens\u00e9 tout de suite que cela \u00e9tait aussi un signe que l\u2019\u00c9glise est jeune, que l\u2019\u00c9glise\u00a0est vivante, pas seulement de la jeunesse de l\u2019\u00e2ge mais surtout de la jeunesse de l\u2019Esprit,\u00a0celle qui laisse place \u00e0 Dieu dans notre vie, Lui qui nous garde constamment dans la joie\u00a0et la jeunesse.<\/p>\n

It is a joy for me to convey to you the greetings and friendship of our Holy Father Pope\u00a0Francis, and his spiritual presence among us, in this important event in the life of the\u00a0church, and especially of the Archdiocese of Ottawa, namely the Ordination of a Bishop.<\/p>\n

Comme Notre Archev\u00eaque, Mgr Prendergast, l\u2019a rappel\u00e9 au d\u00e9but de cette eucharistie,\u00a0pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment aujourd\u2019hui c\u2019est le premier anniversaire du d\u00e9but de la mission de Pasteur\u00a0universel de l\u2019\u00c9glise du Pape Fran\u00e7ois, qui ne perd jamais l\u2019occasion pour nous\u00a0demander de prier pour lui. Alors je vous invite \u00e0 un moment de silence pour prier\u00a0ensemble pour lui.<\/p>\n

Our Christian faith helps us to realize that a Bishop is first of all a gift coming down\u00a0from heaven, is a gift of God who, through the Pastors of the Church, wishes to renew\u00a0and to make tangible to us His presence in our history, the presence of a Shepherd who\u00a0takes care of us, who gives his life for us.<\/p>\n

So we prayed for the Pope and we pray now for our new Bishop Christian (a moment of\u00a0silence).<\/p>\n

L\u2019\u00e9v\u00eaque est un cadeau, de Dieu mais en m\u00eame temps il est aussi le fruit de notre\u00a0travail, le fruit de nos mains.<\/p>\n

He is, as we easily understand, the fruit of the love of his family. So I would like to take\u00a0this occasion really to offer a profound thanks to daddy Heribert and mommy Colette and his two sisters, because Bishop Christian is the fruit of their daily prayer and of their\u00a0daily sacrifice.<\/p>\n

L\u2019\u00e9v\u00eaque est aussi le fruit de la communaut\u00e9 chr\u00e9tienne, des paroisses et de tous ceux\u00a0qui vivent leur foi, les pr\u00eatres, les religieux et religieuses, le fruit de la foi de la\u00a0communaut\u00e9 chr\u00e9tienne.<\/p>\n

Je voudrais tout sp\u00e9cialement remercier l\u2019Archev\u00eaque Gervais qui l\u2019a ordonn\u00e9 pr\u00eatre et\u00a0l\u2019Archev\u00eaque Prendergast qui a eu confiance en lui et qui se r\u00e9jouisse de l\u2019ordination de\u00a0Mgr Christian.<\/p>\n

And I would also like to thank the Companions of the Cross, this religious family who in\u00a0a special way helped Bishop Riesbeck to discover his christian and priestly vocation.<\/p>\n

Don de Dieu et fruit de nos mains, l\u2019\u00e9v\u00eaque est \u00ab une \u0153uvre \u00bb qui n\u2019est jamais termin\u00e9e:\u00a0l\u2019\u00e9v\u00eaque continue d\u2019avoir besoin de notre soutien, de notre support. Nous avons de bons\u00a0\u00e9v\u00eaques dans la mesure o\u00f9 nous accompagnons nos \u00e9v\u00eaques, o\u00f9 nous prions pour nos\u00a0\u00e9v\u00eaques, o\u00f9 nous souffrons pour nos \u00e9v\u00eaques. Comme dans une famille on a de bons\u00a0enfants si on se donne a eux, si on vit pour eux, le m\u00eame arrive pour les pr\u00eatres et pour\u00a0les \u00e9v\u00eaques. Donc il faut continuer \u00e0 accompagner le nouveau \u00e9v\u00eaque.<\/p>\n

I would like to tell you, Bishop Christian: courage, you are not alone, we are behind\u00a0you!<\/p>\n

Now let me tell you that Bishop Christian leaves an open task to all of us: there is an\u00a0emptiness to be filled up, because with his ordination as a bishop there is a priest less in\u00a0the Archdiocese and so we have to find a way to fill this gap. Let us therefore pray with\u00a0faith and confidence to the Lord. Let us ask for a new priest, for new priests in this\u00a0Archdiocese, and also for good families, because there are no good priests without good\u00a0families.<\/p>\n

Today is the feast of Saint Joseph Patron of Canada. Dear Bishop Christian, as Saint\u00a0Joseph was the shadow of the Heavenly Father in the care and protection that he gave to\u00a0Jesus and Mary, so may you be a loving Father, so that together with your Archbishop,\u00a0and in close collaboration with the priests, religious and lay faithful of this Archdiocese,\u00a0you may be for the Church a servant of the (joy of the) Gospel of Jesus Christ for the\u00a0hope of the world (Apostolic Exhortation Pastores Gregis, October 16, 2003).
